Football League Champions 2010

The Sainsbury Cup was held at Tower Road on Saturday 18th November 2006. The competition staged by Tower Road School is the local round of the National Competition. The Friday before the tournament heavy rain threatened to cause the postponement. Saturday morning came with clear skies and no markings on the pitches as a result of heavy rain. A quick re-mark early in the morning saved the day. Teams arrived for a prompt start at 9.00a.m.

Teams from across the Boston area converged on the school to contest the title. Altogether 15 schools were represented and arranged in four leagues they produced a splendid display of schools' football to entertain the large crowd. The games produced many competitive and skillful games with lots of goals and dramatic saves. By 12.00 the initial leagues had produced 4 semi-finalists, these schools being St. Thomas', Staniland, Tower Road and Boston West. A draw for the semi-final saw Staniland beat Boston West 1-0 and in the other half of the semi-final Tower Road drew 1-1 with St. Thomas'. The game was settled after extra time with Tower Road going through 4-2 on penalties.

The final as expected produced a very tight game. Chances came at either end with Tower Road creating more but failing to convert and Staniland defending resolutely. The game moved into extra time and a loose ball bouncing in the Tower Road penalty area was headed in for Staniland. Tower Road continued to produce chances but failed to find the back of the net. Congratulations to Staniland who now head off for the County finals in Skegness in January.

Many thanks to the staff of Tower Road who organised and refereed the competitions. Special mention to Mr. Scoot who refereed constantly through the morning, covering 12 games in total. Without whos help we could not keep the competition moving and keeping to time.
